Welcome to the blog about Western State Colorado University Mountaineers
traveling to Iceland. I am Dr. Sally Hays and I have the
pleasure of taking 7 Western State students to study in Iceland this May. We are all flying to Iceland on May 9th. Before
we leave Colorado I wanted to find out why each student wanted to go on this
trip, their hopes for the trip and if they had any concerns before we left.
Carly: "I've always wanted to visit. Also finishing up my last credit here at WSCU is the coolest way ever!!"
Zack: "I want to go outside the US and study as it is a great opportunity."
Sydney:"I have always wanted to go to Iceland, it is so beautiful, and remote. It is without a doubt a place most people will never get to explore."
Akemi: "I love to travel and experience different cultures! I would love to see all of the beautiful sights of Iceland, and learn how they are a self-sustaining country."
Michela: "I wanted to travel to a new place and learn more about the energy use in Iceland."
Caitlin: "Intellectual growth, interest in Vikings, looks beautiful and never left the country before.'
Kassia: At work and I will get her opinion soon.
Myself: I spent my Junior year in college at Lancaster University in England and it changed my outlook on life. Four years ago I was a Fulbright Scholar to Iceland for 6 months. I fell in love with the people and country and can't wait to explore it with my students.
From the class syllabus:
The next blog will be from Iceland about our travel days.

From the class syllabus:
The
class will focus on how the environment of a small, isolated island in the
middle of the North Atlantic ocean has shaped and been integrated into the
culture, language, economy, and society of Iceland. Starting with a historical
look at the immigration of humans to Iceland around 870 AD, we will explore how
the environment influence early society and its impacts on current society.
Each student will select an individual learning plan becoming the expert on
their topic of choice and lead discussions while in Iceland. Topics can include
but are not limited to economics/business (historical, energy, fisheries,
tourism, environmental, natural resource use, development), environmental
(eco-tourism, sustainability, renewable energy), historical (political,
democracy, religion), literature (Sagas, mythology, science fiction), geological
(volcanology, climate change). This interdisciplinary course will spend 4 days
in Reykjavik (the northern most capital in the world), 4 days along the
southern coast (renewable energy and waterfalls) and 7 days in west Iceland
(land of the sagas, Viking settlements).
The next blog will be from Iceland about our travel days.
Have a great time. I know you will learn a lot!
